Therapy for Couples and Families

Relationships can be complicated!

This is especially true with the people you love the most.

Often, a difficult family relationship is the very thing that brings us to therapy. This may refer to your spouse, your parent, or even your own child. If you’re finding yourself in constant conflict with someone you love, family therapy may be right for you.

How does family therapy work?

It depends! It can work in a variety of ways.

Say you’re already in therapy for yourself, and a particular issue involving your spouse keeps coming up. In this case, you may want to bring your spouse into a few of your sessions to work through those issues.

Inviting your loved one into therapy with you can be very valuable, but, ultimately, this is your decision.

Or perhaps you are looking to mend your marriage. In a marriage, we unknowingly bring our own past into the relationship. We grew up interacting with our family members in a certain way. Sometimes, these interactional styles don’t mesh in our marriage.

In this case, therapists often recommend that the couple not only seek therapy together, but also consult their own individual therapists.

Maybe your teenager is seeing her own therapist, and it becomes apparent that certain family dynamics are contributing to her anxiety or depression. In this case, with your child’s consent, you, as parents, may join sessions for a short, long, or ongoing period of time.

Some people don’t want to invite another person into the confines of their own therapy while others welcome the idea!
Feel free to discuss this with your therapist, and together you can make the decision that’s right for you.
